Apanel discussion was held as part of the international conference organized by the Supreme Court of the Amhara Region and Bahir Dar University.

The international conference organized by the Supreme Court of the Amhara Region and Bahir Dar University, under the theme Rule of Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution for Sustainable Peace and Development, continued in the afternoon.
During the afternoon session, Dr. Samir Youssef, Director of the Rift Valley Institute, presented a paper titled Four Manifestations of the Rule of Law: A Framework for Building Peace.
The paper explored the fundamental link between the rule of law and sustainable peace, the mutuality of these concepts, and their close connection in creating a just and resilient society.
Subsequently, a panel discussion was held on the topic Rule of Law and Sustainable Peace: From Concept to context, with a focus on peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and recovery.
The panelists included Dr. Ermias Yemane, State  Minister of Ministry of Justice; Professor Mesfin Araya, Chief Commissioner of the Ethiopian National Consultative Commission; Ato Ahmed Hussein, President of the Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Council; Ms. Agata Manags, Head of the ICTY in South Sudan; Dr. Tadesse Sime, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS); and Ato Moses Okello, Senior Researcher at the Horn of Africa Institute for Security Studies. The discussion was moderated by Her Excellency Ms. Belien Gebremedhin, Commissioner of the Ethiopian National dialogue.
The panel discussion examined the relationship between the rule of law and sustainable peace, emphasizing that peace entails not only the absence of conflict but also justice, accountability, and strong institutions.
It also focused on the role of the rule of law in peacebuilding, particularly in conflict prevention, resolution, and recovery.
The panelists shared key ideas from the presentation in advance and offered their perspectives and experiences in addressing issues related to the topic.
Coming from diverse institutions with different roles in peacebuilding, the panelists’ varied perspectives enriched the discussion and helped participants better understand the relationship between the rule of law and peacebuilding.
The panelists also responded to and clarified questions from conference participants regarding the rule of law and sustainable peace.
