The Amhara Region Supreme Court and Debre Markos University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in improving justice service delivery, institutional capacity building, research and innovation, free legal aid services, human resource development, and broader justice sector reform initiatives across the region.
The agreement was signed by the President of the Amhara Region Supreme Court, Honorable Ato Alemant Agidew, and the President of Debre Markos University, Sayeh Kassaw (Dr.).
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Honorable Ato Alemant Agidew emphasized that sustaining the comprehensive judicial reforms and institutional transformation initiated by the Supreme Court requires continuous investment in the capacity of the institution, its leadership, and its professionals.
He noted that Debre Markos University's extensive experience in legal education, professional training, community service, and free legal aid will provide valuable support to the Court's ongoing reform agenda.
The President further stressed that the partnership would go beyond a formal agreement, stating that it will be implemented through a comprehensive action plan designed to produce measurable results and improve the lives of citizens through enhanced access to justice.
In his remarks, Debre Markos University President Dr. Sayeh Kassaw stated that the university currently offers 58 undergraduate and 56 postgraduate academic programs through its ten colleges and schools. He highlighted the university's School of Law as a key contributor to producing qualified legal professionals serving Ethiopia's justice system.
Dr. Sayeh explained that the university has long collaborated with courts and justice institutions in areas such as capacity building, in-service training, legal aid, research, and community engagement. He noted that the newly signed MoU will institutionalize these collaborative efforts, making them more coordinated, sustainable, and results-oriented.
He further stated that the two institutions will jointly develop projects and mobilize support from development partners and funding organizations to promote sustainable improvements in the justice sector.
The Memorandum of Understanding is expected to significantly strengthen cooperation between the Amhara Region Supreme Court and Debre Markos University in areas including institutional capacity building, research and development, knowledge management, human resource development, free legal aid services, and other joint justice sector initiatives. Through this partnership, both institutions aim to advance a modern, efficient, and accessible justice system that better serves the people of the Amhara Region.
