Senior and mid-level leaders of the Amhara Region and Addis Ababa Police institutions, including their respective commanders, visited the Amhara Region Supreme Court to observe the court’s far-reaching reforms and modernization initiatives in the justice sector.
The Amhara Region Supreme Court has been undertaking a range of transformative initiatives aimed at fundamentally improving the delivery of judicial services across the region.
Through the expansion of modern judicial service infrastructure and institutional and human-resource capacity building, the Court is working to reduce the costs, inconvenience, time and effort incurred by court users while ensuring efficient, predictable and trusted judicial services at all levels of the regional court system.
As part of the visit, Lieutenant General Tigabu Yilma, Commander of the Amhara Region Police General Directorate; Lieutenant General Asrat Denero, Commander of the Addis Ababa City Administration Police General Directorate; and Deputy Commissioner Erziq Issa, Commander of the Criminal Investigation General Directorate of the Addis Ababa Police, along with other senior police officials, toured the Court’s reform and modernization facilities.
The delegation visited the Court’s digitalization infrastructure, a modern childcare facility, and modern courtrooms equipped to facilitate transparent proceedings and remote hearings.
They also observed the Court’s one-stop digital service center and call center, through which litigants and other court users can obtain information and access services.
The delegation also toured the Justice Museum of the Amhara Region Supreme Court, which has been developed and organized in a modern manner to preserve and showcase the history and evolution of the justice and judicial system.
Receiving the delegation, Honorable Ato Alemante Agidew, President of the Amhara Region Supreme Court, briefed the visitors on the modern judicial service infrastructure introduced and being implemented by the Court, as well as the institutional development initiatives and efforts undertaken to create a conducive working environment.
Honorable President Ato Alemante Agidew, explained that the Court’s Justice Museum was established to document and present, in chronological order, the historical development of Ethiopia’s and the region’s justice and judicial systems from ancient times to the modern era.
The museum is intended to serve justice-sector stakeholders and future generations by preserving and showcasing this institutional history.
For their part, Lieutenant General Asrat Denero and Lieutenant General Tigabu Yilma expressed their appreciation for the modern infrastructure and reform initiatives they observed at the Supreme Court, commending the Court’s efforts to improve the delivery of judicial services throughout the region.
The commanders noted that one of the major challenges in institutional development is ensuring that reform initiatives that begin at the top are effectively cascaded down to lower levels. In this regard, they said the Amhara Region Supreme Court’s progress in introducing modern judicial service infrastructure within a relatively short period—and extending these initiatives beyond the Supreme Court to all higher courts and 27 Woreda courts—demonstrates that the institution is following a sound and effective institutional development process.
They further described the Court’s paperless judicial services and other reform and modernization initiatives as valuable experiences that could serve as models for others.
The police commanders also expressed their commitment to working collaboratively with the Amhara Region Supreme Court on issues of common interest and areas where the institutions share responsibilities.
The visit underscored the growing importance of institutional cooperation and digital transformation in strengthening the justice system and improving access to efficient, transparent and user-centered judicial services.
