The Amhara Region Supreme Court held a consultative forum with partners and stakeholders to review the implementation of the Regional Courts' 2018 Fiscal Year Strategic Plan and assess the achievements of the three-year Judicial Transformation Program implemented from 2016 to 2018 E.C.

Opening the forum, the President of the Amhara Region Supreme Court, Honorable Ato Alemante Agidew, emphasized that justice and the rule of law are essential foundations for economic growth, social development, and democratic governance. He stated that the judiciary plays an irreplaceable role in promoting national stability and development by safeguarding the rights of citizens through fair and evidence-based judicial decisions.

The President noted that the Court had developed and implemented a comprehensive three-year Judicial Transformation Plan tailored to the realities and needs of the region, resulting in substantial progress across several key areas.

Among the major achievements highlighted were strengthening the capacity of judges, court leaders, and judicial staff; restructuring and operationalizing the Law and Justice Institute; improving court management systems; expanding the use of technology in judicial services; increasing the accessibility, efficiency, and transparency of court services; and enhancing public satisfaction with the justice system.

Honorable Ato Alemante also stated that the establishment of traditional courts throughout the region has significantly expanded access to justice while contributing to sustainable peace and social reconciliation. In addition, he noted that ongoing efforts to strengthen arbitration mechanisms for trade and investment disputes are expected to play an important role in supporting regional economic development.

Reviewing the performance of the 2018 fiscal year, the President announced that the regional courts had achieved significant improvements compared with previous years in reducing case backlogs, resolving cases within prescribed timeframes, improving the quality of judicial decisions, and meeting other key performance indicators.

Expressing his appreciation, Honorable Ato Alemante thanked judges, court leaders, judicial staff, justice sector institutions, partner organizations, and all stakeholders whose commitment contributed to the achievements recorded during the implementation of the transformation program. He called for even stronger collaboration and coordinated efforts in the years ahead to further improve judicial services and better respond to the justice needs of the public.

The consultative forum was attended by Supreme Court leaders and judges, presidents of the regional High Courts, heads of various government offices, legal scholars from higher education institutions, members of the legal profession, religious leaders, representatives of civil society organizations, and other partners and stakeholders.
