Amhara Region Supreme Court’s special focus in the 2026 budget year is to implement the region customary courts in all kebeles of the region.

The Supreme Court recognized and launched 15 traditional dispute resolution systems that it had studied as regional customary courts, and was able to appoint elders and clerks of traditional courts in more than 1,000 kebeles of the region.

The Supreme Court, which is providing the necessary capacity building training to the elders of the traditional courts in each kebele to officially begin their work, has been able to provide the necessary capacity building training to the elders of the traditional courts in South Wollo, Central Gondar, Bahir Dar and its surroundings to officially begin their work.

A similar induction and capacity building training was also held for the elders of the traditional courts in North Shewa Zone to officially begin their work.

On May 29/2026, a launch event was held in the presence of the President of the Supreme Court of the Amhara Region, Honorable Ato Alemante Agidew, and other senior federal and regional officials. On that day, the model traditional courts were opened and officially started their work. Today, elders and clerks were given capacity building training on how to carry out their work, and it was also possible to ensure that they have sufficient understanding of the proclamations and guidelines that govern the traditional courts.

The capacity building and awareness-raising training was given on the study of traditional courts, the proclamation and guidelines of the traditional court, and the training was given by Ato Yimam Seid, Head of the Office of the customary Courts Advisory Council of the Supreme Court of the Amhara Region, and Honorable Judge Tizazu Getachew.

The training will enable the elders and clerks of the traditional court to carry out their duties properly, and following the training, the elders raised their questions and were given answers and explanations to them.
