Bahir Dar, July 3, 2026 (Amhara Region Supreme Court)
The Amhara Region Judiciary and Justice Sector Joined-Up Forum and the Sector's Sustainable Growth and Development Plan Steering Committee convened a joint evaluation forum to review the performance of the 2018 Ethiopian budget year.
Opening the forum, Hon. Ato Alemant Agidew, President of the Amhara Region Supreme Court and Chairperson of the Judiciary and Justice Sector Joined-Up Forum, emphasized that strong collaboration among justice institutions is essential to delivering justice services that are accessible, efficient, effective, and trustworthy.
The President stated that the collaborative initiative, which began through a mutual agreement in September 2017 E.C., has since been institutionalized at the regional, zonal, and woreda levels under the legal framework established by Proclamation No. 297/2017. He noted that the initiative has already produced tangible and encouraging results.
Hon. Ato Alemant Agidew further highlighted that, for the first time in the region's history, the judiciary and justice sector has been incorporated as a distinct sector in the Amhara Region's 25-Year Sustainable Growth and Development Plan. He described this as clear evidence of the regional government's strong commitment to strengthening the justice sector and expressed his appreciation for the support provided.
Reviewing the sector's performance during the 2018 budget year, the President stated that the judiciary and justice sector had achieved better results than in previous years. He noted that significant progress had been made in legal and institutional reform, human resource development, the expansion of digital justice services, the establishment of smart courts, the strengthening of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, the enhancement of customary courts, improved information sharing among justice institutions, and the development of an integrated crime prevention system.
The President also announced that the Law and Justice Institute is being restructured into a Center of Excellence, while the Police College has been upgraded to a Police University College. According to him, these developments have created greater opportunities for leaders and professionals across the sector to receive comprehensive capacity-building training.
Furthermore, he stated that the preparation of a regional integrated crime prevention strategy, the establishment of a Judiciary and Justice Information Center, and the implementation of an information-sharing agreement among justice institutions through the Joined-Up Forum will further enhance the effectiveness of justice administration in the region.
Emphasizing that the ultimate mission of the judiciary and justice sector is to ensure effective and equitable justice for the public, Hon. Ato Alemant Agidew called upon all institutions within the sector to strengthen their collaboration, sustain the reforms already underway, and continue working in a coordinated manner toward their shared objective of delivering quality justice services to the people.
