Bahir Dar, September 30, 2026 (Amhara Region Supreme Court)
The Second Annual Conference of Judges of the Amhara Region Courts officially opened today in Bahir Dar, bringing together senior regional government officials, including the Speaker of the Amhara Regional State Council, H.E. W/ro Fantu Tesfaye.
The annual conference of judges of the Amhara Region Courts is organized with the objective of enhancing the delivery of judicial services across the region. It is held on the legal basis of the Amhara Region Courts Strengthening Proclamation No. 297/2017.
Addressing the conference on its objectives, the President of the Amhara Region Supreme Court, H.E. Ato Alemante Agidew, said the conference provides judges with an opportunity to develop a common understanding of key issues within the justice system and to establish a shared perspective on areas of judicial service delivery requiring particular attention.
He further noted that the conference enables judges to broaden their perspectives on emerging and evolving legal issues and is intended to contribute to making judicial service delivery more comprehensive and effective.
Recalling that the first annual conference was held under the theme “A Shared Vision for a Strong Judicial Service,” President Alemante said the performance of the courts during the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year was better than ever before and had received recognition from the Regional Council. He expressed his appreciation to the judges and all employees of the courts for their contribution to the achievement.
The President also stated that ensuring judicial independence had been among the priority areas of work undertaken by the courts. He noted that efforts to create a conducive working environment, from the Supreme Court to the High Courts and Woreda Courts, had produced meaningful results.
Regarding access to justice, President Alemante highlighted the court system’s digitalization efforts, noting that they have brought significant changes to judicial service delivery across the region by reducing the time, cost, and inconvenience faced by litigants.
He further identified ethical development and the establishment of cooperation platforms among judicial and justice-sector institutions as among the other important areas of work undertaken by the courts.
President Alemante also stated that the Supreme Court is working to achieve the region’s 25-year justice and judicial-sector development plan and announced that the sector’s next transformation plan has been prepared.
According to the President, the first annual conference of judges of the region contributed to tangible changes in the courts’ comprehensive reform efforts. He said this year’s conference will therefore focus on issues that can further consolidate and sustain the reform and improvement initiatives already underway.
The Second Annual Conference of Judges of the Amhara Region Courts will continue its deliberations over the coming days, focusing on key issues aimed at strengthening judicial service delivery and advancing the ongoing reform efforts of the courts.
