Bahir Dar, January 24, 2026 (ANRS Supreme Court)

An international conference on the rule of law and alternative dispute resolution for sustainable peace and development is underway in Bahir Dar.
The President of the Amhara Regional State, His Excellency Mr. Arega Kebede, who attended the international conference jointly organized by the Amhara Regional Supreme Court and Bahir Dar University, welcomed participants from various countries and institutions to Bahir Dar. During his welcoming remarks, His Excellency stated that the city is hosting several regional, national, and continental forums, including this conference.
His Excellency noted that Bahir Dar annually hosts the Tana Forum, where African leaders and stakeholders discuss peace and security issues on the continent. He added that the city is also preparing itself to become an international judiciary and mediation center.
His Excellency further explained that the conference theme—focusing on the rule of law, alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, and sustainable peace and development—is closely linked to the constitutional role of the courts and the mission of the judiciary, as well as the development aspirations and hopes of the region and the country. He emphasized that sustainable peace can only be ensured within the framework of the rule of law, and stressed the importance of harmonizing formal judicial and justice systems with traditional community-based conflict resolution mechanisms to achieve a win-win outcome for all parties.
His Excellency expressed his gratitude to the President of the Amhara Regional Supreme Court, Mr. Alemante Agidew, for his leadership, as well as to his management team and the co-organizer of the conference, Bahir Dar University, for leading large-scale reform efforts. He added that the regional government is working to ensure the effectiveness of judicial reform by focusing on legal amendments, monitoring and support mechanisms, and the provision of special budgetary support to the sector, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening these efforts in the future.
