The Second Annual Conference of Amhara Region Courts Judges, which brought together more than 2,000 judges from across the region under the theme \u201cExpanding Access and Enhancing Judicial Services,\u201d<\/em> has concluded after ten consecutive days of deliberations and training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference featured discussions and training on key issues aimed at strengthening the professional competence and institutional capacity of the region\u2019s courts, reinforcing judicial ethics, improving the efficiency and quality of justice delivery, and ensuring that judicial services are accessible to all citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his closing remarks, the President of the Amhara Region Supreme Court, Hon. Alemante Agidew, expressed his appreciation for the judges\u2019 active and constructive participation. He recalled that the primary objectives of the conference were to enhance professional knowledge, foster a common understanding of key judicial issues, and strengthen professionalism across the region\u2019s courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President noted that, by upholding the Bahir Dar Commitment made during the First Annual Conference in 2018 E.C., courts at all levels had registered encouraging performance during the fiscal year. He said these achievements reflected the dedication and commitment of judges and urged them not to become complacent but to remain focused on outstanding tasks and priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the ten-day conference, participants addressed a wide range of topics, including judicial ethics; the new criminal procedure and evidence laws; civil procedure; land and commercial laws; company and bankruptcy laws; investment and special economic zone laws; the capital market system; human rights protection; digitalization; and court-annexed mediation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, reports on plan implementation and monitoring, organizational structure studies, and documents outlining the institution\u2019s future reform directions were presented for discussion and feedback, with the aim of strengthening leadership capacity and advancing institutional reforms within the courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference also helped build a shared understanding of approaches to balancing judicial independence with accountability, improving the quality and efficiency of judicial decision-making, ensuring the continuous professional development of judges, and strengthening coordination among courts at different levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hon. Alemante Agidew particularly emphasized the need to improve the quality of decisions in woreda courts, enhance judges\u2019 professional capacity, expand digital judicial services, and strengthen the monitoring and support provided by high courts to lower-level courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further underscored the importance of expanding the digital justice initiatives already underway in the region\u2019s courts, including e-filing, smart courtrooms, and videoconferencing. He also stressed the need to improve the services available to court users through the 6152 call center and the courts\u2019 mobile application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference concluded with a call for the knowledge gained and lessons learned during the Second Annual Conference to be translated into practical action in every court. It also called for stronger judicial ethics and accountability and for the provision of fair, efficient, and high-quality judicial services that enhance public trust in the justice system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
