The second annual conference of judges of the Amhara Region courts continued its third day with a series of professional training sessions and presentations on various legal and judicial issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the topics presented during the day was a professional presentation entitled \u201cThe Role of Courts in Protecting Human Rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presentation was delivered by Assistant Professor Anchinesh Shiferaw, from the Center for Human Rights at Addis Ababa University. She explained that courts are among the key institutions responsible for ensuring the effective protection of human rights in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assistant Professor Anchinesh noted that human rights encompass both individual and collective rights, including civil and political rights as well as economic, social, and cultural rights. She explained that when individuals or groups approach courts alleging violations of their rights, courts have a responsibility to ensure that those rights are effectively protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She further emphasized that courts should examine alleged human rights violations brought before them in accordance with the law and provide appropriate remedies where violations are established. In this regard, she noted that holding law-enforcement and other public institutions accountable for actions beyond their lawful authority is one of the important responsibilities expected of courts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Assistant Professor also explained that, beyond interpreting and enforcing domestic laws, courts are expected to give effect, in accordance with Article 9 of the Constitution, to international human rights instruments to which Ethiopia is a party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her presentation, Assistant Professor Anchinesh also highlighted access to justice as one of the fundamental pillars of human rights protection. She identified several key elements of access to justice, including the ability of people to physically reach courts without undue difficulty, access to legal assistance and representation, simple and accessible court procedures, and the timely enforcement of judicial decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe longer and more burdensome court procedures become, the less willing people will be to bring their cases before courts,\u201d Assistant Professor Anchinesh said, emphasizing that making judicial procedures simple, efficient, and accessible is crucial to ensuring access to justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accordingly, the presentation underscored that courts should not limit their role in protecting human rights to the interpretation and application of the law alone. They should also strengthen systems that enable citizens to easily access justice and seek remedies when their rights have been violated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second annual conference of judges of the Amhara Region courts is continuing under the theme \u201cExpanding Access and excellence in Judicial Service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
