Judges attending the Second Annual Conference of Judges of the Amhara Region Courts have received training on legal issues related to the recovery of assets obtained through criminal activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training was aimed at strengthening judges\u2019 knowledge and practical capacity to adjudicate complex financial and economic crime cases effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training was delivered by Mr. Yalemtarik Shimelis, Director of Asset Recovery at the Ministry of Justice. It focused on key aspects of asset recovery, including the identification and tracing, seizure, preservation, confiscation, and recovery of assets, as well as evidentiary and procedural issues arising in asset-related cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training also covered detailed provisions of Proclamation No. 1364\/2025 on the Recovery of Proceeds of Crime, which provides a legal framework for the identification, investigation, preservation, seizure, confiscation, and management of assets linked to criminal activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants discussed the principle that wealth should be distributed fairly, as provided for under the Constitution, and emphasized that the recovery of public assets unlawfully misappropriated is a legal and institutional responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training further highlighted the importance of recovering proceeds of crime, noting that economic crimes can have serious adverse effects on tax revenues, foreign exchange, the financial system, and foreign investment. It was also emphasized that no one should be allowed to accumulate wealth through criminal activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given the significant impact of economic crimes on the national economy and their often complex nature, the training underscored the need for coordination and cooperation among multiple institutions involved in investigating, prosecuting, adjudicating, and recovering criminal assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training also enabled judges to examine practical and legal challenges relating to financial evidence, interim measures, confiscation proceedings, third-party rights, and international cooperation in asset recovery cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
