The Amhara Region Supreme Court held a discussion with its judges and presidents of the regional high courts on the performance of the regional courts during the 2018 Ethiopian budget year and the priority areas set for the 2019 budget year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opening the discussion, President of the Amhara Region Supreme Court, Honorable Ato  Alemante Agidew, said that the courts have been implementing a three-year transformation plan aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of judicial service delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honorable President Alemante Agidew, noted that the 2018 budget year was marked by significant progress in both the regular court system and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. He said the progress had also been recognized by various stakeholders, including the Regional Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further said that the recognition and encouragement received from Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed during his recent visit to the Supreme Court was a strong source of motivation and hope. The Prime Minister\u2019s acknowledgment of the achievements recorded within a relatively short period, he said, has encouraged the courts to consolidate the progress already made while initiating new areas of reform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Prime Minister\u2019s visit has entrusted us with a greater responsibility to further improve the delivery of judicial services,\u201d Honorable President Ato Alemante said, emphasizing that the recognition should serve as an impetus to strengthen ongoing reforms and pursue new initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the President, the regional courts performed better in the 2018 budget year than in previous years in terms of the quality of decisions, case disposition, and other performance indicators. He expressed his appreciation to court leaders at all levels, judges, and staff who contributed to the achievements recorded during the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honorable President also highlighted the range of activities undertaken during the year to sustainably improve judicial service delivery. He said efforts were made both within the regular court system and through alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to provide faster, more efficient, quality, and trusted judicial services to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President acknowledged that challenges had previously existed in maintaining close working relationships between the courts and executive institutions in areas of joint responsibility. However, he emphasized that continued cooperation is essential to ensuring the public\u2019s shared benefit, bringing tangible improvements in justice and judicial service delivery, creating conducive working environments, and constructing modern facilities for the provision of judicial services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stressed that such cooperation would continue while maintaining the institutional independence of the judiciary. He also expressed his appreciation to the regional government for its comprehensive support in enabling the ongoing reform initiatives to move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead to the 2019 budget year, The Honorable President said the courts have set ambitious plans and priorities. These include institutional and human-resource capacity building, digitalization, improving the quality and efficiency of judicial services, expanding diverse justice-delivery mechanisms, strengthening coordination and collaboration, and introducing other new initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He emphasized that the coming budget year will therefore be a critical period for consolidating the achievements of the ongoing transformation while advancing new reforms designed to make judicial services more accessible, efficient, effective, and responsive to the needs of the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
