Bahir Dar, August 03\/2026 (Amhara Region Supreme Court)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Amhara Region Supreme Court, in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and the Catholic Church of Ethiopia Bahir Dar\u2013Dessie Diocese (CCE-BD), has officially launched a six-day Training of Trainers (ToT) program aimed at strengthening the capacity of customary court judges across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opening the training, Special Advisor to the President of the Amhara Region Supreme Court, Worku Yaze (A\/P), emphasized the vital role customary courts play in delivering justice that is accessible, timely, and affordable while promoting lasting peace and social cohesion within communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that enhancing the capacity of customary courts on human rights, particularly the rights of women and children, as well as the core principles embodied in the Customary Courts Proclamation, requires the collective commitment and support of all partner institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on behalf of the partners, Abba Tamirat Ato, Pastoral Coordinator of Catholic Relief Services and Deputy Director of the Catholic Church of Ethiopia Bahir Dar\u2013Dessie Diocese Office, highlighted that resolving disputes through dialogue, reconciliation, and mutual agreement strengthens community unity. He added that empowering customary courts contributes significantly to ensuring speedy, effective, and community-centered justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the first day of the training, participants received sessions on the customary justice system, legal pluralism, the fundamental principles of customary courts, judicial independence, the roles and responsibilities of customary court judges, human rights, gender equality, and the relationship between customary courts and the formal justice system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sessions were facilitated by Ato Yimam Seid, Head of the Advisory Council for Customary Courts at the Amhara Region Supreme Court, and Ato Abebe Kassie, Director of the Research Directorate at the Amhara Regional State Institute of Justice and Law and a researcher and trainer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The training forms part of ongoing efforts to expand access to justice by recognizing 15 customary dispute resolution systems across the region and establishing customary courts in 1,377 kebeles. Through this initiative, the Amhara Region Supreme Court and its partners aim to enhance the institutional capacity of customary courts and improve the quality and accessibility of justice services for communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
