The President of the Amhara Region Supreme Court, Honorable Ato Alemante Agidew, presented the performance report of the region courts for the 2018 Ethiopian budget year to the Standing Committee on Law and Justice of the Amhara National Regional Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presenting the report, the President stated that the courts implemented a comprehensive annual plan built around 11 strategic goals, aligned with the judiciary’s five-year strategic plan, which is derived from the national 25-year Judicial and Justice Institutions Strategic Plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the report, the courts achieved a 94.46 percent case clearance rate<\/strong>, successfully disposing of the vast majority of cases filed during the budget year. The report also highlighted significant progress in improving the quality of judicial decisions through the successful implementation of programs designed to enhance judicial performance and service delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To strengthen the professional competence of judges, the courts created opportunities for education, training, and experience-sharing both within Ethiopia and abroad. In addition, a judicial knowledge management database and digital library were established, while measures to reinforce judicial ethics and accountability were further strengthened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report also outlined notable achievements in the modernization of judicial services. Smart court systems, electronic filing (e-filing), voice-to-text technology, the 6152<\/strong> call center, official court websites, and other digital services were introduced across the Supreme Court, all Zonal High Courts, 27 Woreda Courts, and the correctional facilities in Bahir Dar and Injibara. These innovations have enabled court users to file, track, and monitor their cases remotely, significantly reducing both the time and cost of accessing justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Significant progress was also recorded in expanding alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. During the reporting period, 15 customary courts<\/strong> were officially recognized, while 7,381 customary court judges<\/strong> were elected and deployed across 1,377 kebeles<\/strong>. The report indicated that 1,048 cases<\/strong> were resolved through customary courts during May and June alone, generating an estimated savings of 29.9 million birr<\/strong> for litigants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the report highlighted extensive efforts to strengthen institutional coordination among justice sector organizations to better protect citizens’ rights and improve the quality of justice services. It also emphasized ongoing initiatives to develop the Regional Justice and Law Institute into a center of excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his concluding remarks, Honorable Ato Alemante Agidew noted that, beyond delivering justice, the regional courts have made meaningful contributions to promoting economic development, encouraging investment, and strengthening good governance throughout the region. He also provided detailed explanations and responses to questions raised by members of the Standing Committee regarding the court’s annual performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
