The Supreme Court of the Amhara Region is conducting training and capacity building activities for the customary courts that have been given the authority in accordance with the Proclamation No. 298\/2025 on the customary Courts of the region. Today, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Justice, an official launch and capacity building training forum was held for the customary courts located in different kebeles of the North Shewa Zone of the Amhara Regional State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President of the Supreme Court of the Amhara Region, Honorable Ato Alemante Agidew, who opened the training platform, said that the Supreme Court is working on a roadmap for the implementation of the traditional courts, a training manual for providing consistent training, and a communication strategy to fully operate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Honorable President, who stated that the selection of traditional court judges was conducted in 1170 kebeles in the region, said that more than 400 female elders were selected, demonstrating the role of women in resolving disputes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said that traditional courts provide access to justice and are cost-effective, as well as simple and follow a system familiar to the community, so they have the potential to uncover the truth and repair damaged relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honorable Ato Alemante Agidew, who said that we should all play our part in organizing and strengthening customary courts, thanked stakeholders that supported the construction of customary court centers and capacity building training for customary court judges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on the occasion, state minister for the Ministry of Justice, Dr. Ermias Yemanebirhan, said that the Ministry of Justice is working on a plan to expand traditional justice delivery methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stating that our society has developed justice delivery institutions that have been used for many years, the state minister stated that a study conducted by the Ministry of Justice confirmed that 43 percent of disputes are resolved through traditional dispute resolution systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also noted that recognizing traditional courts will enable the decisions made by traditional courts to be implemented and will help develop the assets of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Ermias, who stated that the Minister of Justice has been providing training and support to the traditional court centers since the preparation of the model law, said that their presence at today’s forum is part of this support. The senior officials of the zone who attended the forum, for their part, appreciated the lengths the Supreme Court has gone to in organizing the traditional courts and expressed their readiness to provide appropriate support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
