The Hague, Netherlands, March 29, 2026 (Amhara Region Supreme Court)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An Ethiopian delegation led by Honorable Ato Alemante Agidew, President of the Supreme Court of the Amhara Region, is currently undertaking a working visit to The Hague, Netherlands.
During the visit, the delegation is engaging in discussions with various international institutions to explore avenues for support and cooperation in ongoing and future judicial and justice sector reforms in Ethiopia, particularly in the Amhara region. The discussions focus on a strategic plan to establish Ethiopia as a center for arbitration and to develop a centralized judicial complex in the Amhara region.
In addition to the President of the Supreme Court, participants in the discussions include Her Excellency Ambassador Frituna Dibako, Deputy Head of Mission at the Ethiopian Embassy in Belgium; Engineer Anwar Kassahun, Managing Director of the Ethiopian Engineering Corporation; and other senior officials.
Honorable Ato Alemante Agidew delivered a comprehensive presentation on the reforms being implemented in Ethiopia across the judicial, justice, and economic sectors. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to modernize the justice system and emphasized the importance of collaboration with international institutions to advance these initiatives.
Mr. Garth Schofield, Deputy Secretary-General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, expressed his appreciation for the reform efforts and offered valuable recommendations to strengthen the Supreme Court\u2019s work in the field of arbitration. He also conveyed his institution\u2019s willingness to provide support, particularly in capacity building.
In response to an inquiry from the Permanent Court of Arbitration regarding the status of the Host Country Agreement for establishing a permanent office in Ethiopia, Honorable Ato Alemante Agidew noted that the matter is currently being addressed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice, and is receiving due attention.
Similarly, Ms. Anna Vasilieva, Deputy Secretary-General of The Hague Academy of International Law, outlined her institution\u2019s efforts to strengthen the capacity of legal professionals, particularly judges, across various fields. She noted that the Academy has previously provided training to Ethiopian legal professionals and expressed a strong interest in further collaboration through tailored training programs.
Following the discussions, the delegation visited the Peace Palace, one of the world\u2019s most renowned historic landmarks. During the visit, they toured the arbitration halls as well as the research institutes, library, and museum.
Honorable Ato Alemante Agidew expressed his sincere appreciation to the hosts for their warm hospitality and productive engagements. He affirmed that the delegation had gained valuable insights and would apply these lessons to ongoing judicial and justice sector reforms in Ethiopia and the Amhara region. He further emphasized the delegation\u2019s commitment to strengthening partnerships and sustaining cooperation in line with the understandings reached during the visit.
The delegation is also scheduled to visit additional international arbitration centers and Courts<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n
